  • A character in the play Heartbreak House by GeorgeBernard Shaw. A rogue, a liar, and a womanizer, Hushabye was basedlargely on Hubert Bland (1856 - 1914), a brush manufacturer andmember of the Fabian Society. Bland was widely known for his profligacy, which continued long after his marriage to the writer E(dith) Nesbit.Although he professed highly moral views in public, he took Edith's bestfriend as a mistress, persuading her to live in the same house with them. At one time both women were pregnant by him; all their childrenwere looked after by Edith as though they were her own. Edith, meanwhile, had conceived a deep passion for Shaw, although the affair was neverconsummated.
