  • A musical by Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman, based on ThorntonWilder's The Matchmaker. Having been booed on its pre-Broadwaytour, the show was extensively rewritten before opening in 1964 atthe St James's Theatre; it subsequently ran for 2844 performanceswith Carol Channing in the lead, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical.The part of Dolly was later played by Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (inan all-Black production), and Barbra Streisand in the film version.The first London production opened in 1965 at Drury Lane; West Endrevivals have included an award-winning 2009 production starringSamantha Spiro.

    The musical follows the story line of Wilder's play abouta merchant from Yonkers who falls in love with the matchmaker DollyLevi. The songs include 'Hello, Dolly!', 'Before the parade PassesMe By', and 'It Only Takes a Moment'.
