  • A short-lived genre of English drama during the Restoration.In imitation of classical French tragedy, it obeyed the unitiesof time, place, and action; the main theme, expounded in rhymed couplets,was the conflict of love and honour. The genre is represented by suchplays as Dryden's Conquest of Granada (1671); it wasdealt a fatal blow by Buckingham's burlesque The Rehearsal(1671). see neoclassical drama; Restoration drama.
