__numbering system__ whose base is 16. The first ten digits utilize the decimal digits 0-9, and the remaining six usually utilize the letters A-F. For example, decimal 10 is the same as __hexadecimal__ A, decimal 20 is hexadecimal 14, and decimal 26 is hexadecimal 1A. __hexadecimal notation__ is more succinct than __binary notation__ for representing numbers such as machine addresses. For instance, an __Ethernet address__ is specified by 12 hexadecimal digits instead of a 48-bit number. Hexadecimal numbers usually have either a prefix or a suffix to identify them.
