  • A numbering system whose base is 16. The first ten digits utilize the decimal digits 0-9, and the remaining six usually utilize the letters A-F. For example, decimal 10 is the same as hexadecimal A, decimal 20 is hexadecimal 14, and decimal 26 is hexadecimal 1A. hexadecimal notation is more succinct than binary notation for representing numbers such as machine addresses. For instance, an Ethernet address is specified by 12 hexadecimal digits instead of a 48-bit number. Hexadecimal numbers usually have either a prefix or a suffix to identify them.
