  • In the Elizabethan theater, an actor who was not a sharer in the company's profits. Such men lacked the privileges given to sharers by their patrons; their contractual weekly wage, which ranged from five to ten shillings, was often not fully paid. They played minor roles on stage and also served as prompters, musicians, wardrobe keepers, and theater cleaners.
