indirect-band-gap semiconductor

Definition

Electronics

  • A semiconductor in which the minimum energy in the conduction band does not coincide with the maximum energy in the valence band, and in which transitions between these bands require a change in momentum. Thus, optical transitions between the two bands are forbidden. An example is silicon. Also called indirect-gap semiconductor.
