inferior conjunction

Definition

Astronomy

  • The closest approach of Mercury or Venus to the Earth, when it is in a straight line (except for the inclination of its orbit to the ecliptic) between Sun and Earth. Despite its closeness, a planet at inferior conjunction is hard to observe because it is near the Sun in the sky and because its unlit face is turned to the Earth.
