Instrumental Variables

Definition

Health Economics

  • A method of statistical estimation of models with endogenous regressors (i.e. regressors that are correlated with the error term). It relies on variables ('instruments') that are good predictors of an endogenous regressor but that are not independently related to the dependent variable. These can be used to purge bias caused by endogeneity.
