irregular galaxy

  • Type of galaxy which is neither spiral nor elliptical, but excluding the peculiar galaxies. The Irregulars include types classed as Irr I, capable of being resolved into stars, clusters, nebulae, etc, and Irr II, which remain unresolved. The Magellanic Clouds are the nearest examples. Apart from displaying no regular form, the irregulars are a disparate group, with some showing some trace of form while others are amorphous. They account for a few percent of all galaxies.
