  • An English dumb show (see mime) that evolvedinto the harlequinade. Deriving from the commedia dell'arte,it was brought to England from France in 1702 by John Weaver, whowas the first to put the dances into a sequential story. Plays suchas Harlequin Jack Sheppard featured Harlequin in anEnglish setting and made much use of trickwork. John Rich(see the Riches) began his career performing in theItalian night scenes as Harlequin under the stage name of Lun.
