  • A folk tale of British origin that has been a favourite subject for pantomime since the 1780s. In the story Jack stupidly exchanges his poor mother's cow for a handful of beans. However, the beans, discarded in disgust by the mother, miraculously sprout overnight producing a giant beanstalkreaching up to the sky. The intrepid Jack clambers up the stalk and stealstreasures from the giant's castle at the top - a bag of gold, a hen that lays golden eggs, and a magic harp.In the pantomime version, a young woman usually plays the part ofJack and a male comedian the role of his mother.
