James Clerk Maxwell Telescope

  • UK/Netherlands telescope for submillimetre wavelength observations, opened in 1987 and sited on Hawaii. It is named after the founder of the science of electromagnetism and the discoverer of the laws of energy distribution in gasses. James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879) also provided the first mathematical demonstration that the rings of Saturn must consist of a large number of small particles rather than being solid sheets like a gramophone disc, as had been thought.
