  • A rock opera based on the life of Christ, with music by AndrewLloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The stage musical wasactually devised after the Webber - Rice songs had become a successon an LP record. The show opened in Pittsburgh in 1971 and moved toBroadway later that year; at London's Palace Theatre it ran for 3357performances from 1972 and made £7 million at the box office (atthat time a record for a British musical). It also established theunusual record of having the most actors (five) to play Christ inany production: Paul Nicholas, Steve Alder, Chris Neil, Richard Barnes,and Robert Farrant. After its Broadway opening, producer Robert Stigwoodwas heard to claim: "Jesus Christ could be the biggest thingin history." A highly praised revival opened at the Lyceum Theatre,London, in 1996.

    The story is told by Judas Iscariot, who traces Jesus's lifefrom his entry into Jerusalem until his Crucifixion. Songs include'Superstar', 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', and 'Everything's AllRight'.
