Johann or Georgius Faust

  • German magician, alchemist, and astrologer (c. 1480 - c.1540), whose life gave rise to a legend that has inspired many plays and other works, most notably Marlowe's Dr Faustus and Goethe's Faust. In 1587 The History of Dr. Johannes Faustus was published by Johann Spies at Frankfurt. This established the main outline of the story Faust, in which sells his soul to the Devil in return for 24 years of further life, during which he is to have every pleasure and all knowledge at his command. At the end of that time, when the Devil arrives to claim his bargain. Many other accounts followed and the Faust theme was developed bywriters, artists, and musicians over the centuries. Notable amongst musicalworks inspired by the story are Berlioz's Damnation de Faust(1846), Gounod's Faust (1859), and Busoni's Doktor Faust(1925).
