John Street Theatre
- New York's first permanent playhouse and one of George Washington'sfavourite venues. It opened in 1767 with Farquhar's The Beaux'Stratagem, and was home to the American Company. TheJohn Street Theatre presented the New York premieres of many playsby Shakespeare, including David Garrick's reduced version of Hamlet,which omitted the grave-diggers and Osric. The theater closed in 1798,when it was sold for £115.
