Kuiper, Gerald (1905–1973)



  • US astronomer born in the Netherlands who worked in all aspects of planetary astronomy, especially the study of Mars and the Moon. A flying observatory used by US astronomers is called the Kuiper Airborne Observatory and was used for the observations which led to the discovery of the rings of Uranus. Kuiper is regarded by many as the founder of the present-day scientific study of the solar system.
