  • The stage name of Louise Weber (1860 - 1919), a famouscancan dancer at the Moulin Rouge from 1889 to 1895; sheappears in several paintings of the venue by Toulouse-Lautrec. A formerwasherwoman, the highly paid star became infamous in theatrical circlesfor her frightening temper and lesbian affairs. Following her yearsat the Moulin Rouge, she worked variously as a belly-dancer and lion-tamer,before finally succumbing to alcoholism.
