Labelled Release Experiment

Definition

Astronomy

  • Carried out on the Martian surface by US Viking Landers, the Labelled Release Experiment was designed to detect life by feeding a nutrient including radioactive carbon to Martian surface material and see whether any radioactive carbon could be detected in the waste gas it they might produce. Any Martians present didn’t have earth-type digestion or did not like American cooking – no positive results ensued.
