laser Raman spectroscopy

  • A laser spectroscopic technique that utilizes the Raman effect to obtain information on the vibrational or rotational energy of molecules. Used, for instance, in conjunction with IR spectroscopy to reveal additional detail pertaining to molecular vibrations, as the mechanism for Raman scattering is different from that of IR absorption. Widely used for the determination of quantitative and qualitative aspects of molecular samples, such as structure. Also called Raman spectroscopy.
