The genre, deriving ultimately from 12th-century hymnsof praise was given impetus by a penitential and flagellant movementin the 13th century. The laudi began as narrative works butbecame steadily more dramatic, leading to the later sacra rappresentazione.Still later, the tradition of the lauda influenced the developmentof the oratorio.
