  • noun molten rock and minerals which flow from an erupting volcano and solidify into various types of igneous rock

  • Geologists’ term for molten rock emitted on the surface of a planet and also for the rock formed when it solidifies. Lavas are cooled more rapidly than rocks which solidify at depth in a planet, so that they have crystals of smaller average size. The commonest type of lava is basalt.
