leg show

  • A stage performance featuring a display of women's legs, thisbeing a special feature of revue, US burlesque, and some early musicals. The leg show can be traced back to the inventionof tights for acrobats and dancers in the late 18th century (the Churchpermitted female performers to wear blue tights but considered pinkones indecent). The 'Spanish' dancer Lola Montez scandalizedher audiences in the mid 19th century by dancing without tights. Famousleg shows have included the can-can dance at the Moulin Rouge,Paris, in the late 19th century and the lavish display of showgirlsin the Ziegfeld Follies.
