  • (written as Length of Stay)
    A term usually referring to the time a patient of a particular type (or patients in general) spends in hospital. Mean length of stay (say, by diagnostic related group - DRG) is calculated by dividing the sum of in- patient days by the number of patients within the DRG. People entering and leaving a hospital on the same day have a length of stay of zero.
