  • A switch in which the presence of light, or the intensity of incident light such as that of a modulated light beam, determines the opening or closing of a circuit. A light-activated switch incorporates a photoelectric device, such as a photocell. An example is a light-activated silicon-controlled rectifier. Also called light-operated switch, or photoelectric switch.
