Lighthouse Model

Definition

Astronomy

  • Model of a pulsar whereby the pulses are caused by a thin beam of radiation – like the beam from a lighthouse – sweeping over the observer at fixed intervals. If the Lighthouse Model is correct, the pulsars we see are only a fraction of the total population in the sky – the others have beams which do not sweep across the Earth for astronomers to detect.
