  • A single-shelled mollusc, Paletta vulgaris, with a shell shaped like a flat cone up to 5 cm diameter and which is commonly seen clinging to rocks. It is found in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and is prepared and served like cockles. They are not traded and not particularly good to eat on their own but may be used in sauces and stews.
