  • (Greek: people work) In ancient Greece, a public service requiredof wealthy citizens in Athens. One such task was to assist in thestaging of a drama - tragic, comic, or dithyrambic - byequipping and paying for a chorus. A patron of this kind, called achoregus, was chosen in rotation and excused that year fromgeneral taxes.
