  • noun a number of sectors on a disk whose identification bits have been corrupted. The operating system has marked this area of disk as being used by a file, but the data it contains can no longer be identified with a particular file.

  • On a disk, a cluster which is in use, but is not being utilized to store accessible data. Such a cluster may result, for instance, from program crashes.
