• A derogatory term for an actor, especially one seen as camp, pretentious, orover-effusive in manner. It derives from the tendency of theater people to address oneanother more or less indiscriminately as 'love' or 'lovie'. The label is widely resentedin the profession: Trevor Nunn once told an interviewer that he found the term "abhorrent" and even (bizarrely) "a racist word". The satirical magazine Private Eye runs a regular column entitled 'Luvvies' in which the gushing or self-important sayings of actors are collected.
