  • The first play by Pierre Corneille, a comedy firstperformed in Paris by the Prince of Orange's Players in 1629. Althoughcritics complained that the unities were not observed andstock farce characters were omitted, the play surprised its authorby becoming a great success. The plot involves the confused love affairsof two couples, Mélite and Tircis and Chloris and Philandre,complicated by the intrigues of éraste, who also loves Mélite.
