magnetostriction

Definition

Electronics

  • The mechanical deformation of a material, especially that which is ferromagnetic, when placed in a magnetic field. For example, if such a material is placed in a direction parallel to an applied magnetic field, its length will change. The intensity of the field will determine the extent of mechanical deformation. Also called Joule effect (2).
