  • A group of early 20th-century dramatists associated with the GaietyTheatre in Manchester. Notable members of the Manchester schoolincluded Stanley Houghton (1881 - 1913), whose controversial playHindle Wakes was first performed at the Manchester Gaietyin 1912; Harold Brighouse (1882 - 1958), author of the comedyHobson's Choice (1915); and Allan Monkhouse (1858 - 1936).The Gaiety Theatre company, the first modern English repertory company,was founded in 1908 by Annie Horniman; its firstproduction was Allan Monkhouse's Reaping the Whirlwind.
