  • the largest wine-producing region in New Zealand, in the South Island, with close to 40 per cent of all the vineyards. Pioneered in 1973 by the country’s biggest producer, Montana Wines, Marlborough is especially known for wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc white wine grape variety. Marlborough established its international reputation in the 1980s through one wine, the renowned Cloudy Bay.
