  • A foolish interfering character in The Busybody (1709) by Susannah Centlivre. The name was subsequently applied to any officiousperson who ruins a plan by gratuitous meddling. Similarly named charactersinclude Shakespeare's Sir Oliver Martext, the clergyman in AsYou Like It (1599), and Sir Martin Mar-All, the hero of Dryden's comedy of that name, which was based on Molière's The Blunderer (1655).
