Marriage à la Mode

  • A sophisticated comedy by John Dryden, first producedwith great success in 1672 in London. The plot has two strands. Onestory traces the complex relationships of the lovers Rhodophil, Melantha,Palamede, and Doralice, whose dialogue is written in gentle courtlyverse. Melantha's ridiculously affected use of French phrases givesthe play its title. The other story is written in heroic verse andfollows the struggle of Leonidas, prince of Sicily, to recover histhrone from the usurper Polydamas.
