  • An afternoon performance given at a reduced ticket price (althoughthe word means 'morning'). The first recorded matinee performancewas given at Mitchell's Olympic Theatre in New York on Christmas Day1843; the Irish playwright Dion Boucicault pioneered thematinee in Britain. By the end of the 19th century, 'matinees musicales'had become popular in London.
