  • A once-popular catchphrase deriving from the Fred Karno sketch,The Bailiff (1907). This depicted the stratagems by which abailiff and his assistant, Meredith, attempt to enter the house ofa debtor. The phrase is used by the bailiff each time he thinks heis on the point of success.
