The term, which remainedin use until the 19th century, may have derived from Andrew Borde(d. 1549), court doctor to Henry VIII and a celebrated eccentric.In 1668 Pepys noted in his diary that he saw a ridiculous play entitledMerry Andrew at Bartholomew Fair.
