Messier, Charles (1730–1817)

Definition

Astronomy

  • French astronomer who in the 1770s compiled the first systematic list of nebulae and other extended objects in the sky. His main interest was not in nebulae but in comets, of which he discovered 13. His aim in drawing up the catalogue was to avoid confusion when comet hunting, not provide a list of objects for nebula and galaxy fanciers.
