    An electronic device with a 26m radio telescope to scan eight million radio channels at a time for evidence of transmissions by extraterrestrial civilisations. Run by Harvard University, the project was privately funded for lack of government money. In 1995 the project was upgraded to become BETA, the Billion-Channel Extraterrestrial Array, but operation of BETA was halted in 1999 when the telescope in which it was based was damaged.
