- noun a circuit in which all the active and passive components are formed on one small piece of semiconductor, by means of etching and chemical processes
- noun a complex integrated circuit
- A small piece of semiconductor material upon which miniature electronic circuit components, such as transistors or resistors, are placed. A microchip, for instance, may have hundreds of millions of transistors. There are various types, including memory chips, and logic chips. An entire computer may be held on a single microchip with the appropriate components, and such chips may be used in countless items, such as automobiles, toys, appliances, clocks, and so on. Also called microcircuit (1), chip (1), or IC.
- A miniature electronic circuit, such as that found in a microchip. Microcircuits are composed of microelectronic components. Also called microelectronic circuit, or microminiature circuit.
