  • An amplifier that boosts the low signal level of a microphone to a level suitable as an input for the main amplifier. Such a preamplifier is usually low-noise, provides high-gain, and may be built into the microphone stand, or be contained within the microphone itself. Some microphone preamplifiers also have a volume control. Its abbreviation is mic preamp. Also called microphone amplifier.
