Millimeter Wavelength Astronomy

Definition

Astronomy

  • Branch of radio astronomy of especial value for viewing interstellar gas clouds and the molecules they contain. Millimetre wavelength signals do not pass freely through the atmosphere so that millimetre wave telescopes, which can operate via interferometry or as single dishes, have to be sited on high mountains like optical telescopes, and may ultimately go into space.
