• Stage name of the French actor Guillaume des Gilberts (1594 - 1651),who in 1636 was suddenly afflicted with paralysis of the tongue whileperforming before Cardinal Richelieu in Tristan's La Mariane.He was forced to retire from the stage and did not speak again for14 years.

    At the time of this tragedy, Montdory was the most famousactor in France, the first to be known by name throughout the country.Although his declamatory style was most suitable for tragedy, hisfirst success was in Corneille's comedy Mélite(1630). Seven years later he enjoyed one of his greatest triumphswhen he created the role of Rodrigue in Corneille's tragicomedy LeCid. Montdory founded the Théâtre du Marais wherehe built up an excellent company whom he trained and directed. Afterhis enforced retirement, the Marais never regained its former reputation.
