  • a black grape variety grown in southern France, Australia and California, US, that produces red wine with strong colour, body and the flavour of pine. It requires an environment with a lot of sunshine to ripen the grapes. It is used in French Mediterranean red wines from regions such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape as well as in full-bodied red wines from Australia and California.
