  • Within a multimode fiber, dispersion of light resulting from slight differences in the propagation velocity of the different modes. The core used for multi-mode transmission is generally of a greater diameter than for single mode, and the use of a core with a graded refractive index helps minimize this form of distortion. Also called modal distortion. Two deprecated terms for this concept are multimode dispersion, and modal dispersion.
