• In Greek mythology, the nine goddesses of the arts. The threeassociated with drama were Melpomene, the muse of tragedy,usually depicted as holding a tragic mask and wearing a cothurnus (see buskin);Thalia, the muse of comedy, holding a comic mask; and Terpsichore,the muse of dancing and the choral songs that accompanied it, holdinga lyre. Ancient authors would invoke the Muses, asking for inspirationand artistic success; later this invocation became a literary anddramatic convention.
