  • noun a weak, cowardly person, a wimp. A schoolchildren’s word of the late 1980s which is a shortening of the standard English adjective ‘namby-pamby’.
  • noun a committed opponent of a controversial environmental policy (such as nuclear power). This journalistic quasi-acronym of ‘not in anyone’s backyard’ was coined in imitation of the more common nimby (‘not in my backyard’) in the USA in the mid-1980s.
