  • (written as Narr)
The medieval German equivalent of the English fool. The Narr, who wore the cap and bells of the court jester, became a traditional part of early German farce; he later took on some characteristics of the zanni of the commedia dell'arte. In the 16th century he developed into the central comic character of the Fastnachtsspiel. A number of his clownish traits were adopted by English fools and by this route may have influenced some of Shakespeare's comic figures. Aspects of the Narr's character were adopted by the English actor Thomas Sackville (1590 - 1613) to create the clown Jan Bouschet.
