• Acronym for Navigation Satellite Timing and ranging. A constellation of 24 artificial satellites which orbit at an altitude of approximately 20,000 meters, and which emit signals that are utilized for precise navigation anywhere on the planet earth. Each satellite is equipped with an atomic clock, and continuously sends a time and identification signal. A receiving device obtaining said signals from multiple satellites is thus provided with measurements of its latitude, longitude, and elevation, in addition to the exact time. Depending on the number of signals received, positioning accuracy may be within a meter. This system may also be utilized to keep track of a fleet of cars, a subway train system, and so on. Also called NAVSTAR GPS, or GPS (1).
